Social media has fundamentally transformed democratic communication by providing citizens with immediate access to political information and interactive public discourse. This paper examines how digital platforms influence public opinion formation, civic engagement, and political participation in contemporary democracies. It explores the opportunities created by social networking sites for citizen mobilization, public debate, and policy advocacy while also addressing challenges such as misinformation, algorithmic bias, online polarization, and declining trust in traditional media. The study argues that democratic institutions must strengthen digital literacy, improve platform transparency, and encourage responsible online participation. Effective governance and collaborative efforts among policymakers, technology companies, educators, and civil society organizations are essential to maintaining democratic values in the digital era.
